When immersed in spa water (once a week for 30 minutes) the Silverwand gives off a vast quantity of charged silver ions (see the magnified image).  The silver ions attach to the cell wall of pathogenic bacteria and destroy the bacteria's ability to reproduce. The result is water that is bacteria-free and safe for bathing. 

This process is an electro-physical reaction that utilises a very low (and safe) voltage DC current which is supplied continuously to the Silverwand from a small, rechargeable,  battery. 

The silver ions remain active in the water for many days and it is recommended the process be repeated once a week.

The sacrificial silver rod can be expected to last 5 years before needing replacement.
